2027 Contest Guidelines

PUBLIC SCHOOL DIVISIONS FOR TEAMS

Public School Divisions For Officers

Dance Officers will be divided into 3 divisions (unless combined for lack of competition in one division)

DANCE OFFICERS

Social Officers (NEW)

This division will compete separately.

All Social Officer groups have the opportunity to compete for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place using their highest score—this is different from before. Each group will take their highest score (if doing more than one) to compete against other Social Officer Groups. The highest score will receive 1st place; the next, 2nd place; and the next, 3rd place.


No other award will be given in the Social Officer Division.

Intermediate + Junior High Public + Private School Division

All teams will compete by size division.

 

If there are several teams, and sizes are very wide in membership numbers, MDDT Texas reserves the right to create size groupings.

Elementary Public + Private School Division

All teams will compete together and will have the opportunity to win awards in the elementary division.

STUDIO DIVISION

SOLO Division

There will be a winner and 4 runners up in each grade level.

Soloists are separated by Studio/Public/Private School/Independent and by grade level. We accept independent soloists.

ENSEMBLE DIVISION

MDDT may combine divisions for the sake of competition.

Contemporary

 A style of dance that traditionally combines classical modern with classical ballet. Today we also see  jazz, lyrical, and hip-hop now influencing the choreography.

Performance in this category may express an emotion or story. 

Hip Hop

Contemporary

 A street dance style primarily performed to hip-hop music or that evolved from hip-hop culture and includes moves primarily breaking, locking, and popping.

Modern

Modern

 A style of dance whose roots began as a complete contrast to ballet. Movements stem from contractions, swing and release and fall and recovery. Themes and variations tend to lead the choreography.

Novelty

Novelty

An unusual or humorous dance performance that usually has a theme that carries the performance by using choreography appropriate to the character of the dance.

Jazz

Novelty

A style of dance that partners music and body that reflects a compilation of cultures. It combines syncopated rhythms with technical movements that stem from classical ballet. Combinations of movements, formations, and groups work, incorporating leaps and turns, and technical elements are all incorporated in the performance.


Lyrical

A melding of ballet, jazz, and modern dance with emphasis on using the lyrics and emotions of the music to influence the choreography and performance. The emphasis of this genre incorporates a fluid style within the choreography.

This genre may express emotion, literal phrasing, or a story.

Pom

Prop

 A style that has a strong emphasis on intricate arm movements and is visually pleasing to the eye. Poms should be utilized for the (75%) majority of the routine.

Technical skills, synchronization, precise movements are essential throughout the routine.

 A style that incorporates an object that leads the choreography and helps paint a picture for the audience.This category emphasis on skills/creativity. Props must be used the  (75%) majority of the time.

Any style of dance that does not fit into the traditional categories. Usually a combination of categories or a routine with a more theatrical element. It's acceptable to enter any genre. Usually themed, utilizing various dance elements and styles. Staging, props, and/or backdrops may be used, and performances must not exceed 5 minutes.

 A dance routine where the majority of the dance includes varied kick sequences and display proper form and technique with an emphasis on precision, timing, technique, and height uniformity. Kicks should contists of a minimum of 75% of the performance.

A dance performance with choreography consisting of strong, sharp, linear movements focusing on precise moves, sync placement, and formation changes. 

Gameday

Gameday

A unique dance performance using a traditional fight song and dance moves that portray high energy and build the spirit of the crowd. Any genre can be used, but the only props would be spirit towels and poms in the dance portion. (Spirit Signs are allowed).
